What's Your Focus Word 2022?
Choosing a Word of the Year
I am not one for New Year’s resolutions, but I am one for choosing a focus word for the year ahead.
A word of the year brings clarity to who you want to become, what you want to practice, and how you want to move through your days.
The idea is simple. Your word gives you a way of being. It guides your thoughts, your choices, and your actions. It becomes a gentle reminder of what matters to you.
A focus word gives you a thoughtful nudge toward positive change. It helps you pause and ask:
Does this choice line up with who I want to become?
Does this action move me closer to the life I want?
Does this thought support the way I want to show up?
Your word is not a magic formula. It will not do the work for you. But it gives you something steady to return to again and again.
For me, a focus word helps me reset. It brings me back to my values. It reminds me to move through the year with more intention.
And the best part is this.
Your word only needs to be meaningful to you.
So how do you choose one?
Start by thinking about how you want your year to feel. Choose a few words that speak to the life you want to build, the habits you want to grow, or the mindset you want to practice.
Your word might be a noun, a verb, a feeling, or a value. Anything works as long as it feels personal.
Ask yourself:
What do I want more of this year?
What do I want less of?
What do I need to practice?
What do I want to release?
What kind of person do I want to become?
Sometimes the first word feels close, but not quite right. When this happens, look for words in the same family. One word might lead you to another. Often, the right word slowly rises to the top.
Maybe your life needs more peace.
More courage.
More simplicity.
More adventure.
More focus.
More joy.
More trust.
Take your time. Quiet your mind. Let your word find you.
My focus word for 2022 was LISTEN.
At first, you might think this means listening to people. For me, it meant listening to life.
I wanted to notice the ways life was speaking to me through people, moments, signs, opportunities, and small connections. I wanted to pay closer attention to where I felt led, where I felt peace, and where I saw reminders of support around me.
I wanted to listen for meaning.
I wanted to notice the quiet moments of connection in my life.
It felt simple to me, even if it was hard to explain to others. But that is the beauty of a focus word.
It does not have to make perfect sense to anyone else.
Your word is for you.
