Social Media Makeover
Give Your Social Media an Emotional Makeover
Recently, I spent several hours at the salon getting my hair professionally straightened. During the appointment, I had a great conversation with my stylist.
She told me she had taken a break from social media for a few days. She already felt lighter and happier.
As she talked, she shared something many of us understand. While scrolling, she had started feeling bad about herself. She found herself comparing her life to other people’s posts. She noticed envy, pressure, and a quiet feeling of not being enough.
I think we all feel this at some point.
Scrolling through other people’s highlight reels often makes our everyday lives feel less impressive. Their vacation. Their family photo. Their clean kitchen. Their big moment. Their success story.
And suddenly, our normal day feels small.
I told her she had done a great job pressing pause.
A social media break is a great first step, but once you return, the same feed is still waiting for you. The same posts. The same comparisons. The same emotional pull.
So instead of only taking a break, try giving your social media an emotional makeover.
Here are three simple steps.
Step One: Pause
Before you scroll again, pause and ask yourself a few questions.
What do I enjoy seeing?
What inspires me?
What teaches me?
What encourages me?
What makes me feel heavy, jealous, angry, or less than?
What do I want more of in my daily life?
This step helps you notice how your feed is shaping your thoughts.
Step Two: Purge
Go through your social media accounts and remove anything draining your joy.
Unfollow accounts that make you feel less than.
Mute people who pull you into comparison.
Hide posts that leave you anxious, irritated, guilty, or discouraged.
Let go of pages that no longer fit who you are or who you are becoming.
You do not owe your attention to every post, page, or person.
Your feed should not steal your peace.
Step Three: Add Pleasure
Now fill your feed with things that lift you up.
Follow accounts connected to your hobbies.
Find pages about places you love or want to visit.
Add voices that inspire, teach, and encourage you.
Follow people who remind you of beauty, growth, humor, creativity, faith, health, and joy.
Love art? Follow art.
Love music? Follow music.
Love travel? Follow travel.
Need encouragement? Follow encouragement.
Want more joy? Follow You Got Joy.
Your social media feed should support the life you are trying to build.
Life is hard enough without handing our peace over to endless comparison.
You get to choose what you let in.
Pause.
Purge.
Add pleasure.
Take charge of your feed, and you will start to notice a shift in your thoughts, your mood, and your day.
